IT was less free-range, more free-scoring on Sunday evening (6 September) at Newhaven’s Trafalgar Ground as two Sainsbury’s stores went head-to-head on the pitch, all to raise money for charity.
Eastbourne’s Hampden Park store came out as the victors in an end-to-end game against Newhaven, ending 8-6 after a thrilling final minute of play saw the visitors score two goals in the blink of an eye to grab the win after it looked as though the game was destined for penalties.
While Hampden Park has secured bragging rights on this occasion, the result is secondary to the cause both teams were playing for.
Sunday’s game was put together as a fundraising event for Sainsbury’s ‘Move for Meals’ campaign, in collaboration with Comic Relief. The programme is focused on trying to tackle child and family hunger, ensuring families have ‘the stability, resources, and dignity to they need to thrive’.
All Sainsbury’s stores have a leader to be the head of their fundraising efforts, with Zoe Guthrie being Hampden Park’s volunteer.
Guthrie set up the game along with Newhaven’s representative and commented: “I was glad to see everyone have a good time. These sorts of events are all a bit of fun for a good cause. We’ve had a nice turnout today of friends, family and co-workers, so it’s great to see everyone enjoying themselves and raising some money in the process’.
Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief have been working together for the past 27 years and have managed to donate over 60 million meals to families in need, as well as supporting hundreds of charities throughout the UK.
