Eastbourne’s skies are set to host a powerful tribute to Britain’s aviation past next month, as a historic Spitfire flypast is expected to pass over the town.
The moment forms part of Spitfire90 UK celebrations between 7-17th April 2026, marking nine decades since the legendary aircraft first took to the skies. The tour is being flown by a two-seat Spitfire painted to replicate the original K5054 prototype (pictured).
A Hurricane is also expected to join the formation, and there are some suggestions that an F-35 Lightning Stealth fighter jet could also join the flypast.
The first flight of the UK tour will depart from Southampton Airport, formerly Eastleigh Airport and the location of the first flight of the Spitfire in 1936, before heading east along the south coast.
Its planned route includes a pass over Beachy Head before the aircraft continues to RAF Coningsby, home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. However, the organisers, Spitfires.com, say final details and flight path could change depending on other air traffic.
The flight is the first of nine taking place across the UK between 7 and 17 April, with each leg pairing the historic Spitfire with modern RAF aircraft, from Typhoons to transport planes, highlighting the evolution of British air power.
Exact timings for the Eastbourne flypast are yet to be confirmed and will depend on weather conditions.
A charity auction is taking place to get involved in the anniversary tour.
