A COUNTY councillor has hit out at East Sussex Highways for failing to reinstate road markings and cat’s eyes months after resurfacing a stretch of Jevington Road.
County and Parish Councillor, Stephen Shing, says he is ‘increasingly alarmed’ by what he describes as dangerous inaction over the C40 route between Friston Pond and Wannock, warning that the lack of central markings poses a serious safety risk to drivers.
He said: “This omission is more than cosmetic. On this narrow, winding rural road, the lack of a central line and reflective markers significantly raises the risk of head-on collisions, especially during dusk, night, or poor visibility.
“Repainting verge markings alone only serves to push vehicles toward the unmarked centre, compounding the danger.
Cllr Shing says residents have submitted repeated emails and formal complaints, but with little response or visible progress.
A spokesperson for East Sussex Highways said: “As Jevington Road is narrow, road markings to indicate the edge of the carriageway were put in place in accordance with the corresponding road regulations on completion of the surface dressing work.
“However, following discussions with the Road Safety team, it has been agreed that despite the road width falling below the minimum requirements, the edge of carriageway markings will be replaced with centrelines and road studs to enhance road user safety along the route.
“The road markings and studs will be laid overnight, and it is anticipated it will take approximately five nights to complete the work. We hope to start the work towards the end of next month and will advise residents and motorists of the necessary road closure dates as soon as the permit is granted.”
