FIFTEEN new bus shelters have been installed across Eastbourne, but another 149 remain to be completed under the town-wide replacement programme.
Eastbourne Borough Council expects half of the 164 shelters covered by the scheme to be in place by the end of October, with all work scheduled for completion by mid-February.
The programme previously experienced manufacturing delays, resulting in some older shelters being removed before their replacements were ready. This left passengers without cover at several stops and prompted concerns as wetter and colder weather approached.
Installation work is now progressing, with the council reporting that new shelters are being erected each week.
The replacements include improved seating, lighting and accessibility features and are intended to provide greater comfort and protection for passengers.
Cllr Colin Swansborough, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, Staff and Performance, Enterprise, acknowledged that residents had faced a wait.
He said: “We recognise that people have been waiting for the new shelters and appreciate their patience while the programme progresses.
“We are continuing to work closely with the contractor to ensure the remaining shelters are delivered as quickly as possible.”
Cllr Tom Nevill, who represents Upperton ward, said shelters were particularly important for older people and residents who depend on public transport.
He said: “The new shelters will offer improved protection from the elements and better accessibility features, helping to make travelling by bus a more comfortable experience.”
