FIREFIGHTERS tackled a large grass fire near Stone Cross after crews were called to reports of a blaze late last night.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called at 11.19pm on Tuesday, July 14, to a field on Hailsham Road, Stone Cross, close to the wind turbines.
Around 50 metres of grass was found to be well alight when firefighters arrived.
Fire engines from Eastbourne, Hailsham, Seaford and Crowborough attended the incident, where crews used hose reel jets and fire beaters to bring the fire under control.
The fire service said firefighters made steady progress in extinguishing the blaze.
Residents were advised to avoid the area while emergency services dealt with the incident and were also urged to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution due to smoke.
There were no reports of any injuries, and the cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
If you receive a further update on the cause or the time the incident was concluded, I can incorporate that into the story.
