A PERSON was rescued from the water with suspected spinal injuries after jumping from Eastbourne Pier on Sunday evening (July 27).
Eastbourne RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was launched just after 8.10pm following reports that someone had jumped from the pier. Within two minutes of launching, the D-Class lifeboat crew found the casualty in the shallow water beneath the structure, being supported by members of the public.
RNLI volunteers carried out an initial assessment and were quickly joined by Coastguard Rescue Officers and ambulance crews. The emergency teams worked together to stabilise the casualty before they were taken to hospital for further treatment.
Following the incident, the RNLI warned of the dangers of pier jumping, which they say can have “deadly” consequences.
A spokesperson said: “Pier jumping might look like fun — but it can be deadly. Hidden underwater hazards, sudden changes in water depth, strong tides, and cold water shock can all turn a split-second thrill into a tragedy. Even experienced swimmers can get caught off guard.”
The charity urged anyone who sees someone in trouble by the coast to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
