TORRENTIAL rain, thanks to Storm Benjamin inundated parts of Eastbourne last night, causing sudden flash flooding on several roads.

From late Wednesday into the early hours, Whitley Road, Willingdon Road Roundabout and Rattle Road were hit hardest by the downpour.

Our photos show water surging up through manhole covers, pushing lids skyward under the pressure of subterranean torrents. The force of the flooding also swept debris across carriageways, rendering some sections impassable.

Meteorologists confirm that Storm Benjamin brought intense rainfall in short bursts, overwhelming drainage systems across the region.

Drivers are urged to take extra caution in the coming days, especially during heavy downpours, and to avoid driving through unknown flood depths.

A yellow weather warning is currently in place for some parts of the UK for wind and rain.
