EASTBOURNE is preparing for one of its biggest community celebrations of the year as the town’s carnival returns to the town this weekend with a blockbuster theme of Lights, Camera, Action.
More than 50 groups are set to transform the seafront into a vibrant parade of colour, music and entertainment on Saturday, May 23, as thousands of spectators are expected to line the route for the annual extravaganza.
From dazzling costumes inspired by television, film and theatre, to live music and international performers, organisers are promising an unforgettable day of celebration.
The main parade will begin at 2pm, making its way from Fisherman’s Green to the Wish Tower Slopes, with participants bringing energy and spectacle along the entire seafront route.
Among this year’s highlights will be the return of a visiting contingent from the Dortmund Carnival, alongside groups representing Latin America, adding an international flavour to the festivities.
Crowd favourites are also back, including last year’s Best Non-Sussex entrant Bhangra Smash Up, as well as the Metronomes Steel Pan Orchestra from the world-famous Notting Hill Carnival.
The day’s festivities begin well before the parade, with the Mayor of Eastbourne, Margaret Bannister, officially launching the carnival at Victoria Place at 11am.
From midday, Bhangra Smash Up will perform at The GlassHouse, off Royal Parade, helping to build the party atmosphere before the main procession gets underway.
As the parade reaches the western end of the seafront later in the afternoon, celebrations will continue with a lively carnival street party at the Wish Tower Slopes, running from 4.30pm until 8.30pm, featuring performances from Bhangra Smash Up, Fergus, Just Vibez and Mr General.
Visitors are also being asked to bring change or donate via QR code on the day, with funds helping support participating charities, non-profit groups and the future of the carnival in 2027.
