EASTBOURNE Borough Council has announced plans for a major £700,000 upgrade to the town’s iconic Bandstand with work scheduled to begin once the 2025 summer season ends.
The project, which is subject to planning permission, will deliver essential repairs and improvements, including enhanced audience seating designed to boost comfort and accessibility.
To ensure public safety, the Bandstand will be temporarily closed from the middle and lower promenade while work takes place, although access along Grand Parade will remain open throughout.
Council leaders said the timing of the works was carefully chosen to minimise disruption and ensure this year’s full programme of summer shows went ahead as planned.
The investment marks the latest stage in a long-running restoration effort, which has already seen more than £1 million spent in partnership with Historic England and other bodies. Previous upgrades have included a new stage and roof, improved drainage, electrical and lighting systems, and restored stage doors.
A council spokesperson said they remain determined to secure further financial support from central government after bids to the Levelling Up Fund and the Heritage Development Trust were unsuccessful.
“Despite these disappointments, we will continue to lobby for grant funding and do everything possible to safeguard the future of this much-loved landmark.”
