AN Eastbourne bus driver is preparing to tackle a gruelling 50-kilometre Ultra Challenge Walk to raise money and awareness for a charity supporting men’s mental health.
Mark Wrapson, who has worked for Stagecoach South East for more than nine years, will take on the endurance challenge in aid of the men’s mental health charity MenWalkTalk.
Alongside his role as a bus driver, Mark is currently completing a trade-up apprenticeship in engineering. A keen long-distance walker, he sees the challenge as an opportunity not only to test himself physically and mentally but also to encourage more men to talk openly about their mental wellbeing.
The cause is particularly close to his heart. Mark has experienced his own mental health difficulties and has also lost a friend to suicide, experiences that have reinforced his belief in the importance of speaking openly and seeking support.
Mark said: “Through my own experiences, I’ve come to realise how important it is for men to feel comfortable talking about their struggles. Too often, men bottle things up rather than seeking support.”
As part of his preparations, Mark has been training regularly with the help of his three dogs and hopes that, during Men’s Health Week, his fundraising efforts will help start more conversations around mental health.
He added: “Don’t be ashamed to talk about what you’re going through. Whether the issue feels big or small, speaking openly can make a huge difference.”
MenWalkTalk is a charity dedicated to supporting men’s mental health by encouraging open conversations through organised walks and community support.
Anyone wishing to support Mark’s fundraising efforts can donate via his JustGiving page.
