EASTBOURNE Pier was forced to close unexpectedly yesterday (Tuesday) after damage was discovered on the structure, prompting a swift response from the town’s coastguard team.
Reports of the damage prompted the Eastbourne Coastguard Rescue Team to deploy to the seafront following a report from a concerned member of the public.
On arrival, specialist teams carefully assessed the damage and cordoned off the affected area to keep visitors safe.
Shortly after, Pier management made the decision to close the entire structure as a precautionary measure, according to the Coastguard.

A spokesperson for Eastbourne Coastguard said: “This incident marked our 37th and 38th callouts for July, our busiest month on record. Our teams worked quickly to assess the situation and ensure public safety. Once the area was secured and handed over, we were immediately retasked elsewhere.”
A spokesperson for Eastbourne Pier said: “The Pier was closed only 30 minutes prior to its normal closing time and was reopened at 9am next morning.”
