FEARS over the stability of the Eastbourne coastline have intensified after Holywell Steps were temporarily closed just days after a major cliff fall at nearby Birling Gap.
Eastbourne Borough Council confirmed the precautionary closure today (Monday 2 February) after cracks were discovered in the chalk cliff face behind the steps, raising concerns about the risk to public safety.
The closure comes less than a week after a significant cliff fall at Birling Gap on 27 January triggered a large-scale emergency rescue operation. On that occasion, nine members of the public and a dog had to be brought to safety after becoming trapped following the collapse.
Holywell Steps are located just three miles east of Birling Gap Steps.
In a statement, Eastbourne Borough Council said: “Please be aware we have temporarily closed Holywell Steps today as a precautionary measure. Cracks have appeared in the chalk behind the steps, which could pose a risk to the public. A geotechnical assessment of the chalk will be carried out, as well as necessary maintenance work. Further updates will be provided in the coming days.”
Members of the public are being urged to avoid the affected areas and to plan coastal walks carefully, with warnings that there may be no safe exit points along sections of the cliffs.
