EASTBOURNE MP Josh Babarinde has used Prime Minister’s Questions to demand that the Government intervene after a catastrophic Barclays blunder left a local woman £124,875 out of pocket.
Pamela Beevers was expecting £125,000 from a cheque written by her terminally ill partner in 2023, but Barclays credited just £125 to her account despite the correct amount being clearly stated.
Although the bank has admitted fault, it has offered her only £250 in compensation, leaving her with no resolution despite exhausting every formal avenue.
In a question to the Prime Minister Mr Babarinde asked: “Will he work with me to ensure that Barclays finally pays Pam the compensation she needs and deserves?”
The Prime Minister described the case as “staggeringly bad” and said the Government would do “everything they can” to support Pam.
Mr Babarinde went on to call for a Windfall Tax the super profits of big banks to bring bills down for local residents who are struggling.
Josh Babarinde MP said: “I am appalled by Barclays’ reckless mistake that has had a life changing impact for Pam from Langney. Pam must be fully compensated. Anything less is completely unjust. No one should ever be left out of pocket because of a banking error.
“I will continue fighting for Pam and I’m pleased to have secured the support of the Prime Minister today to try and put this right for her, and to make sure this never happens to anyone again.”
