Eastbourne Borough Council has stepped up its fight against fly-tipping with a fresh warning to residents and local businesses, after five fines were handed out in less than three weeks.
Between May 30 and June 19, the council’s Neighbourhood First team issued Fixed Penalty Notices to individuals and companies caught dumping waste illegally around the town.
A construction company received two separate fines after being captured on camera abandoning furniture at a local recycling point.
Meanwhile, a town centre hair salon was fined £200 for leaving commercial waste by domestic bins, in breach of trade waste regulations. Three residents also found themselves penalised for leaving household items along the seafront, an act described by officials as irresponsible and damaging to the town’s image.
All those fined took advantage of the council’s early payment scheme, reducing the penalties from £200 to £120.
Councillor Jim Murray, Cabinet Member for Carbon Neutral 2030, said: “Fly-tipping is not just unsightly—it’s a threat to the safety, health, and reputation of our community. We have zero tolerance for those who dump waste illegally, and these recent fines demonstrate we mean business. Everyone has a part to play in protecting Eastbourne’s environment.”
He praised the swift and effective work of the Neighbourhood First officers, who continue to patrol key areas and respond to public reports of illegal dumping.
