MORE than 900 music fans packed Eastbourne Bandstand on Monday as hometown favourites Toploader returned for a sell-out Bank Holiday performance.
The concert took place on what was officially the hottest Bank Holiday Monday on record, with blazing sunshine adding to the atmosphere as crowds gathered at the seafront venue for the special homecoming show.
Lead singer Joe Washbourn delighted the audience by acknowledging the band’s Eastbourne roots, telling the crowd: “It’s great to be back in Eastbourne – where it all started.”
The chart-topping band treated fans to a feel-good set packed with classic Toploader favourites, a selection of covers, and even a brand-new track set to be released soon.
At one point during the performance, Joe looked out at the lively crowd in front of the stage and joked that the dance area looked “like a scene from TJ’s in 1994” – a nod to the legendary Eastbourne nightclub that prompted plenty of cheers from fans.
The show reached its climax with the band’s iconic hit Dancing in the Moonlight, which brought the entire crowd to its feet for a euphoric finale.
Toploader, who formed in Eastbourne before going on to international success, have sold millions of albums worldwide and remain one of the town’s most successful musical exports.
The band are due to perform in Brighton on October 18, as part of their latest UK tour.
