EASTBOURNE audiences are being invited to experience an evening of powerful music and heartfelt purpose as The Volya Voices Choir makes its first appearance in the town on Sunday, 1st March.
The traditional women’s Ukrainian choir will perform at The Grove Theatre, located within Eastbourne Library on Grove Road, promising an uplifting programme of folk songs that celebrate Ukrainian culture, resilience and gratitude. The choir performs in both Ukrainian and English, creating an accessible and inclusive experience for audiences of all backgrounds.
Led by choir mistress Lorraine Barry, The Volya Voices are known for their rich harmonies, haunting melodies and joyful, celebratory rhythms that define Ukrainian vocal tradition. Audience members are actively encouraged to join in, making performances as participatory as they are moving.
Formed to share the beauty of Ukrainian folk music with communities across East Sussex and beyond, the choir also carries a powerful mission beyond the stage.
The Volya Voices are deeply committed to supporting those affected by the war in Ukraine, fundraising to source and send vital medical supplies. Initially focusing on life-saving equipment such as tourniquets and contributions towards ambulances, the choir’s efforts have more recently shifted to funding electric wheelchairs for young men and women who have lost limbs, helping restore mobility and independence.
The Eastbourne performance has been organised at the invitation of The Grove Theatre and will run from 6pm to 8.30pm, with doors opening at 6pm. During the interval, audiences will also be able to enjoy traditional Ukrainian food, adding to the cultural experience.
Tickets are priced at £10 for adults, £5 for children, and £25 for families, and can be purchased online or on the door, with additional donations welcome to support the choir’s humanitarian work.
