MOTORISTS are being warned of temporary road closures in Eastbourne town centre next week as major resurfacing works get underway on Devonshire Place.
The improvement scheme, which will strengthen and resurface the road between Grand Parade and the Memorial Roundabout, is scheduled to begin on Sunday, May 31, once the popular 999 Emergency Services Display has finished for the weekend.
The work, which will run continuously 24 hours a day, is expected to be completed by Friday, June 5.
East Sussex Highways says the project has been deliberately timed to take place before the height of the summer tourist season, when thousands of visitors are expected to arrive in the town.
The resurfacing programme has been prompted by damage caused during the winter months and aims to provide a smoother and safer route for motorists, cyclists and public transport users.
A spokesperson for East Sussex Highways said: “Eastbourne welcomes thousands of visitors each summer, and we know how important it is to keep the town moving during this busy period. This is why the work has been planned carefully and scheduled to be completed ahead of the main tourist season.”
To allow the work to be carried out safely, Devonshire Place will be closed to through traffic in phases. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place while crews carry out resurfacing, ironwork adjustments and the installation of new road markings.
The spokesperson added: “We appreciate that this may cause some disruption and we thank residents, business owners and visitors to the area for their patience while we complete these improvements. Our teams will be on site to help manage access wherever possible for residents and businesses.”
Local bus operators have been notified of the scheme and services currently diverted due to the poor condition of the road are expected to return to their normal routes once the work has been completed.
Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for journeys and follow signed diversion routes while the improvements are underway.
The work is expected to be completed in time for the start of Eastbourne’s busy summer events programme and peak visitor season.
