A FOX had a miraculous escape after becoming trapped when its underground den collapsed at Sovereign Harbour in Eastbourne, prompting a delicate rescue by wildlife specialists.
Volunteers from the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) rushed to the scene after a concerned member of the public spotted a fox’s head poking out from rubble where part of the ground had caved in.
When rescuers arrived, they found the animal in a precarious position — its body completely trapped beneath loose sediment with only its head visible above the debris.
It is believed the fox had tunnelled into the bank to create a den, but the roof of the burrow collapsed, leaving the animal immobilised and unable to escape.
WRAS rescuers carefully began digging away the surrounding sediment, working slowly to avoid injuring the frightened animal while freeing its trapped body.
After painstaking work, the team successfully released the fox and safely captured it so it could be transported to the WRAS centre for assessment.
Thankfully, despite the ordeal, the fox escaped without any serious injuries.
Rescuers said the animal was suffering mainly from exhaustion after being trapped under the rubble, but is otherwise expected to make a good recovery.
