EASTBOURNE MP Josh Babarinde has demanded urgent investment in the town’s drainage system after sewage was reportedly discharged along the coast for more than eight hours yesterday (Thursday).

Mr Babarinde said he was ‘absolutely appalled’ by the incident, particularly following months of little or no rain.

He said: “This is completely unacceptable. Southern Water’s infrastructure is clearly not fit for purpose.”

The MP has written to the company’s chief executive to raise his concerns and call for urgent improvements.

“Our environment should not be paying the price for years of underinvestment,” he added.

Meanwhile, a pollution risk warning was issued for Bexhill beach on this morning, with the Environment Agency advising people against bathing.
